The results of the grant competition of the Presidential Foundation for Cultural Initiatives have been announced. Among the winners is the international cultural and educational project “Global Dance Overture 2.0,” implemented by the Russian National Ballet “Kostroma.”
This project represents the second stage of Russia’s large-scale humanitarian mission in the BRICS countries. Its goal is to foster an objective and positive perception of the great Russian culture as a guardian of universal traditional values. The initiative is being carried out within the framework of establishing the The BRICS Alliance of Folk Dance, the importance of which was emphasized by President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin.
Following the completion of the first stage of the project, which took place in the UAE, Egypt, China, and India, the Beijing Dance Academy (China) joined the The BRICS Alliance of Folk Dance. The Sharjah Performing Arts Academy (UAE), the state dance ensemble Reda Troupe (Egypt), the Egyptian Academy of Arts (Egypt), and the National Academy of Music, Dance and Drama “Sangeet Natak Akademi” (India) have begun the process of formalizing their membership in accordance with their respective national procedures.
“Global Dance Overture 2.0” is expanding its geography. In October 2026, the Ballet will represent Russia in Ethiopia; in February 2027, in South Africa; and in June 2027, in Brazil. The project will combine a cultural component (the performance “Russian National Dance Show”) with an educational programme, helping to attract new participants from these countries to the global choreographic community.
A key stage of the educational part will be the “International Creative Dacha” (Residency) in Kostroma. The choreography internship program will bring together dozens of students and young professionals from seven BRICS countries. The project will include cross workshops and practical sessions aimed at in-depth study of Russian folk dance and professional exchange.
The uniqueness of this stage lies in its final outcome: for the promotion of Russian culture, the dance “Kalinka” will be officially transferred to foreign colleagues. Through the transfer of rights to the choreography and music, this symbol of Russian dance will be professionally performed on stages across all BRICS Alliance member countries.
The project will:
• Showcase Russia’s multinational dance culture and traditions to professional choreographic communities and audiences in BRICS countries.
• Demonstrate how effectively dance helps spread positive traditions and strengthen mutual understanding among peoples.
• Expand the Alliance and build strong connections within a unified global choreographic community.
The project “Global Dance Overture 2.0” is implemented with the support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation, and Rossotrudnichestvo.
